Welcome to the Food & Hygiene Facility Inspections Online

At this website you will learn how the DC Department of Health works to minimize your risk of food borne illness. You will be able to view inspection notices from the past 3 years to present.

Food establishments that sell or serve food to the public must apply for a health permit and be inspected for compliance with the DC Department of Health. These establishments include restaurants, school cafeterias, bakeries, mobile food vendors, and markets. The majority of the permitted food service establishments in Washington, DC receive two routine unannounced food safety inspections per year. This website was developed so you may learn more about the food establishments from the perspective of safe food handling, or "food safety." The purpose of a food safety inspection is to ensure the food is being handled properly from preparation through serving. Food Safety Inspectors observe kitchen workers' food handling practices, make certain equipment is working properly, take food temperatures assure proper water temperatures are correct levels, and the proper sanitizing measures are in place. Any problems observed are recorded on the inspection report and the manager is taught the correct procedure or method immediately.

Inspection reports are scanned on a weekly basis. Inspection reports that result in a closure may have been scanned, while a subsequent reinspection report permitting reopening may not have been scanned. A closure means only that the facility was closed on that date, and any absence of a reinspection report should not be taken to mean that the facility is still closed.
